1LOVE GUIDES · SHARE THOUGHTFULLY
Online dating privacy: protect your profile, photos and location
You can be open about your interests and relationship goals without making your daily routine easy to trace. Check three things separately: what you write, what your photos show and which technical permissions you allow. No single setting protects all three.
Prepared with AI assistance for 1Love; source alignment and consistency checked by Codex. No human expert review is claimed. Updated 14 September 2026.
Show your personality, not where to find you
A good profile gives people something to talk about. It does not need your home address or exact workplace. Germany’s police crime-prevention service also advises caution when sharing your address, date of birth and employer details.

All the following examples are fictional. None comes from a member profile or private conversation. Use only statements that are true for you.
Your work without an identifiable workplace
Before
I work at reception in a small clinic right beside the town hall. You can find me there at eight every morning.
After
I enjoy working with people and look forward to quiet conversations after a busy day.
Why? You share something personal without connecting a specific workplace to the times you are there.
A hobby without a predictable route
Before
Every Tuesday at seven, I run alone from the back entrance of my apartment building along the same route.
After
Running helps me unwind. A cosy evening afterwards is always welcome.
Why? Your interest stays visible, without a starting point, fixed time or routine of being alone.
Relationship goals without details of your living situation
Before
Since my breakup, I live alone on the top floor. The apartment below mine is empty.
After
I would like a relationship that can grow slowly, with reliability and room for both of us.
Why? Your intentions are clear without publishing details about your home or neighbours.
Check photos twice: visible details and stored information
Look at the whole picture, not just your face. Pay particular attention to:
- Letters, delivery labels, identity documents and name badges
- House numbers, doorbell labels and recognisable entrances
- Screens, calendars or work documents in the background
- Reflections and other people in the picture
Taking a new photo against a neutral background may be the simplest option. Show other people only with their agreement. For a dating profile, preferably choose a photo of you alone; avoid including children as incidental background subjects.
Image files can also contain metadata, such as the time of capture, device information or location data. Check the file information on your device and remove unwanted details before sharing. Then check the actual file you intend to upload. Menus and export options vary between devices and programs.
Do not assume that every dating platform removes this information automatically. Conversely, removing metadata does not remove a visible house number. A photo you have already shared may also continue to exist as a copy.

You do not need to upload private photos to an unfamiliar online checker or AI chat for this review. Start with the image viewer and file information on your own device.
Separate location permissions from what other people see
First check what the dating app or website is allowed to learn about your location. Separately, check which place names or distances other people can see. A device permission does not automatically answer the question of public visibility.
On Android 12 and later, you can distinguish between precise and approximate location access for apps. This is different from the device setting called Location Accuracy. Even with device location turned off, services can use your IP address for regional results. Turning off GPS does not make you anonymous.
- Does the feature I want to use need location access at all?
- Would approximate access be enough, if my device offers it?
- Can I choose a search region manually, and what will other people see?
- What information remains visible after I revoke permission?
A manually entered region is a statement, not proof that someone is actually there. Check profile information that has already been saved separately.
Set friendly boundaries in conversation
A conversation can be personal without sharing your address or exchanging phone numbers immediately. For example, you could say:
I’m happy to tell you more about myself. I’ll share exactly where I live once we know each other better.
Let’s keep chatting here for now. I’d be just as happy to talk about our shared interests.
Respect the same boundary in others: ask about preferences, not regular routes or work shifts.
First message: personal examplesYour quick check before posting
- Does my text describe my interests without making my daily whereabouts traceable?
- Have I checked photo backgrounds and metadata separately?
- Do I know which location permission I granted and which location information is visible?
- Can I decline private questions without feeling pressured?
What does this mean for 1Love?
This guide offers general advice for adults. It does not promise that 1Love protection features are already available. The app has not launched publicly; planned verification and moderation features are not the same as an operational service.
The 1Love help articles do not replace checking the features and settings actually available in the service you use.
